Your Kantha textile bags and small goods are all handmade by the talented women of Saidpur Enterprises and Community Handicrafts in Bangladesh. These World Fair Trade Organization members employ nearly 100 women to create these gorgeous bags out of upcycled Kantha and Sari textiles. Their origin story really spoke to us - following the war of independence with Pakistan in the 1970s, over a million displaced people ended up in refugee camps in Saidpur, Bangladesh. A non-profit that was providing food and relief in the area recognized the need for the refugees to find a way to support themselves. So they began training women in sewing with the goal of establishing independent enterprises. Saidpur Enterprises & Community Handicrafts are two of the groups founded as part of this effort, and we’re incredibly lucky to be partnering with them! |
